L2 Literacy Lessons: An intervention for Year 2 students
The L2 program provides intensive intervention for Year 2 students who require additional support to achieve expected stage outcomes in literacy. Students receive 30 minutes of one-to-one instruction daily, for a period of at least 10 weeks. The program is implemented by qualified Reading Recovery teachers, who have undertaken additional professional development during a one year traineeship. At Auburn Public School we have implemented the L2 program since 2017, as one of our intervention programs to support students with additional learning and support needs.
The L2 program aims to deepen students’ reading comprehension and engagement with texts. Students are supported to develop a self-extending literacy processing system, moving towards independent problem solving. Diagnostic assessment tools, such as running records and other Reading Recovery assessments, as well as close teacher observation, are used to identify each students’ strengths and highlight areas of additional need. The L2 teacher then tailors daily lesson plans for the student to accelerate their literacy skills.
